About

Freya’s Cat Rescue was formed out of love for feral cats: We have been caring for a feral cat colony in New Jersey for more than twelve years. We are a volunteer, not-for-profit, no-kill cat rescue whose primary function is caring for and rescuing homeless and/or feral and abandoned pets who were forced to locate another home outdoors.

The goal of Freya’s Cat Rescue is to rescue those cats who appear friendly, provide veterinary care by spaying and neutering, then locate forever homes. Many feral cats may instead be TNR’d (Trap-Neuter/Spay-Returned) in addition to providing follow-up care and shelter.

Freya’s Cat Rescue also provides education about feral cat care, nutrition and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, diet free of animal products. We encourage new cat owners the importance of spaying/neutering their pets for their health and longevity and to also alleviate unwanted behaviors that may result in their future abandonment. As part of the Ministry, Freya’s Cat Rescue also provides customized Pet Remembrance ceremonies.

Freya’s Cat Rescue is a small 501(c)(3) non-profit charity organization. We are not funded by any outside source or receive any grants. We have no paid employees and rely on assistance from devoted volunteers. We may only continue our work with public support and the generosity of other like-minded animal lovers.

Donations of canned and dry cat food, litter, paper towels, kitten replacement formula, supplies to build cat shelters, and pet store gift cards are always welcome.

Who is Freya?

Freya (Freyja) was a Norse warrior goddess and leader of the Valkyries. She is also associated with love, beauty, fertility, sexuality, and material abundance. Ornamental necklaces are associated with Freya as she had to have the golden “fire” necklace called Brisingamen, made by four dwarf brothers. In some photos she rides a chariot pulled by two blue or grey cats, as she is the protector of cats, and they of her.

Cat lovers acknowledge the intuition, magic, cunning, and shamanism associated with cats, and these qualities are also bestowed upon Freya. Considered independent, unconventional and unorthodox, Freya symbolizes original thought and a unique approach. She is the non-conformist who challenges conventional rules and standards. Freya married a traveler Odr, who simply vanished. Mythological lore tells that her knowledge and power are beyond earthly realms, ruling over the afterlife. Her qualities are unrivaled.

Freya is often depicted wearing a cape or cloak of falcon feathers that allows her to “shape shift” into that of a falcon, possessing the ability to fly over the land and ward off strife. She was also able to disguise herself and fly away from danger. Falcon symbolizes focus, determination, foresight, intuition, and precision.

It is said that Freya presides over the afterlife, particularly soldiers slain or harmed in battle. She has the ability to communicate with those who have passed over.
